No stranger to the spotlight, heritage timepiece brand Hamilton has shined on the big screen for years thanks to its longstanding relationship with the film industry. Off-screen, some of the world’s most iconic films have also inspired their designs.

In its latest film collaboration, the long-time watch brand has joined forces with The Matrix franchise to mark its anticipated fourth film with the release of a retro-inspired, yet futuristic, limited-edition digital watch.

With the Hamilton PSR MTX, what’s old is new again.

Back in 1970, Hamilton changed the way we tell time when it debuted the world’s first digital wristwatch, the Hamilton Pulsar – undoubtedly one of the most emblematic creations of the space-age era. Now, over 50 years later, the brand celebrates the original digital timepiece with the release of the Hamilton PSR MTX.

The watch is inspired by a digital universe synonymous with challenging the status quo, just like the latest Matrix series film. Back in 1999, The Matrix asked viewers to choose a safe but false future or to enter a dangerous reality and fight for freedom. Now, the saga continues in The Matrix Resurrections, directed by Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who reprise their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity.

Just like how the Matrix film franchise rewrote the rules of science fiction cinema—ushering in a new genre in the process—the original Hamilton Pulsar was reborn in 2020 as the PSR and a symbol of the space-age futurism that led us into the 21st century’s increasingly digital-centric world. As a nod to innovation in both film and watchmaking, Hamilton has now applied the look of the Matrix universe to the similarly retro-futuristic design of another digital icon with the PSR MTX.

Offering a style that stands out in any reality, the Hamilton PSR MTX is limited to 1,999 pieces in honour of the original film’s premiere date. The sleek, stainless steel, all-black timepiece celebrates the return to the Matrix, with nods to the film like green LCD numerals and the movie’s immediately recognizable digital rain pattern inscribed on the case back and on the watch’s special packaging. The watch measures 40.8mm x 34.7mm and is water-resistant to 100 metres.

The Hamilton PSR MTX offers a unique combination of cult classic appeal and retro-chic design, bringing The Matrix’s legacy of heroic revolution straight to the wrist to inspire conversations with fellow style-loving fans of The Matrix.

The film collaboration is a natural one: Hamilton watches have been at the heart of cinema for almost a century, having made an appearance in over 500 movies since its first starring role in the 1932 classic Shanghai Express. More recently, Hamilton’s innovative designs have given the brand a particular lineage in notable sci-fi blockbusters like Tenant and Interstellar

As Hamilton’s list of film credits grows, so does its fanbase thanks to its perpetual evolution both on and off-screen and its timeless star factor.
